On Saturday May 5th, the HOTC outreach team members attended this dog themed event promoting the Club, the value of dog training and responsible dog ownership. A Rally Obedience course was set up to introduce people and their dogs to the sport. A HOTC member guided each owner and dog through the course encouraging them to perform each exercise. At the completion of the course, congratulations were given each owner along with a ribbon and biscuit for the dog.
Community Outreach
As part of the 80th anniversary commemoration in May of 2017, club members raised funds to benefit the West Hartford Police Department, specifically to aid the K-9 program. A $1,500 check was presented to Chief Tracey Gove, Detective Rosario Savastra and K-9 Off. Tom Lazure and his K-9 partner Jett, by HOTC President Jack Petersen and head trainer Lorrie Moule (a former 26 year Animal Control Officer for West Hartford).
The club wanted to raise money for a discretionary fund for unexpected and un-budgeted expenses for the K-9 Unit. They will be able to use this money for medical bills or equipment needs that pop up. The K-9 program is so important in finding lost kids, catching the bad guys, and finding drugs, and also so good for community relations as part of the police family.

Therapy Dog Visits
Bringing Smiles............... is exactly what these dogs do when they go to a nursing home or health care facility to visit the residents. These dogs sense that the people they go and visit need the comfort they provide, breaking the day’s pattern, and for many residents it is the opportunity to reach out and touch some fur, remembering the time when they, too, had a dog. Memories flood to the front and we listen to tales of Buster, Brownie or Spot and the myriad of dogs that had graced their lives. For a fleeting moment as they stroke the fur of our dogs, a smile crosses their face and they are happy. The job is done, our dogs have done what we set them out to do, to bring smiles to everyone.
